Training In A Minute: Quick Select Rows and Columns in Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel has so many neat and useful tricks and techniques to learn and use.

One of the best timesaving shortcuts to learn is how to quickly select rows and columns using keyboard shortcuts.


Using "Ctrl" and "Shift" to navigate Excel

Let's start by making a table:

Now, select a cell in your table and try the following:

  • Hold "Shift" on your keyboard and either use the arrow keys or select another cell

    • Excel will select the cells in between

  • Hold "Ctrl" on your keyboard and then use the arrow keys

    • Excel will jump to the end of the row or column

  • Hold "Shift" AND "Ctrl" on your keyboard and use the arrow keys

    • Excel will jump AND select the cells in between!

Use "Space" to select even faster!

OK, so now you are a professional Excel Cell Selector. Now, here's a few more keyboard shortcuts to know.


Select a cell in your table and press "Ctrl + A" to select all data in your cell:

Press "Ctrl + A" again to include the headers in your selection:

But let's say you only wanted to pick a column or row? Add "Space" into the mix.


Select a cell and press "Ctrl + Space" to select an entire column:

Select a cell and press "Shift + Space" to select an entire row:
